Ten minutes of preparation changes the result more than most people expect. Clear the small items, plan where the pets will be, and write down the history of any spot you want dealt with.
Heavy furniture stays where it is. Anything that does need moving gets agreed when you book, so it is in the plan rather than a surprise on the day. Below: what to shift, what to say, what happens during the visit, and the two things that matter in the hours afterwards.
Quick answer: Move small items, cords, toys and floor lamps off the carpet. Leave heavy furniture. Tell the cleaner what each spot is and what was already tried on it. Afterwards, run a fan and keep furniture off for 6 to 12 hours. Book a visit.
What Should You Move Before the Visit?
| Move it | Leave it |
|---|---|
| Small furniture, floor lamps, magazine racks | Beds, wardrobes, wall units |
| Breakables and anything on low shelves | Sofas, armchairs and dressers |
| Toys, shoes, laundry baskets, pet bowls | Electronics and anything wall-mounted |
| Cords and cables across the floor | Heavy dining tables |
| Small area rugs lying on carpet | Anything you cannot lift comfortably |
| Floor plants | Fragile antique furniture |
Anything you cannot lift comfortably should stay. A cleaner working around a wardrobe is normal, and one injured customer costs more than two hours of extra care.
Small area rugs on top of carpet are the item most often forgotten. Both surfaces need lifting apart to dry, and one damp rug left on damp carpet is how a musty smell starts.
Should You Vacuum First?
Yes, if you have time, and it makes a real difference. Most of what sits in a carpet is dry soil, and the Carpet and Rug Institute treats regular vacuuming as the foundation of carpet care.
We pre-vacuum as part of the job, so nothing is lost if you skip it. One pass the day before means our pass reaches deeper soil rather than the loose surface layer.
Do not shampoo, spray or scrub anything in the 48 hours before a visit. Fresh product in the fibre changes how the carpet responds and can make one spot harder to treat.
What Should You Tell Us Before We Start?
- Which spots matter most to you. Priorities decide where extra time goes.
- What each spot is, if you know. Coffee, pet, paint and dye all need different treatment.
- What was already tried on it. Especially bleach, oxygen products or a rented machine. This is the single most useful thing you can say.
- Any pet accidents, including old ones nobody can smell in winter.
- The fibre or warranty requirements, if the carpet is wool or came with paperwork.
- Allergies or scent sensitivity in the household.
- Access details. Parking, buzzer codes, elevator booking, and whether an alarm is set.
None of those seven questions is a trap. A cleaner who knows a spot was treated with a stain stick last month picks a different approach. One who assumes fresh coffee picks the wrong one.
The access details matter more than they sound
Portable extraction equipment needs a working power outlet and access to a tap. In an apartment or condo, two things decide whether a visit runs to time: a booked service elevator, and parking within reach of the unit.
In winter, a cleared driveway and path matter for the same reason. They also keep salt and slush off the carpet we are about to clean.
What Happens During the Visit?
A walkthrough comes first, to agree what is being cleaned and to look at the spots you flagged. Then seven steps: fibre check, pre-vacuum, pre-spray, dwell, agitation, extraction and pile grooming.
Expect the pre-spray to sit for 10 to 15 minutes before anything else happens. That pause is the part that does the work, and a company that skips it is cleaning faster and worse.
You do not need to be present the whole time. Someone should be there at the start for the walkthrough, and at the end to look at the result.
What Should You Do Afterwards?
Run a fan
Airflow roughly halves drying time, and faster drying prevents the wicking that brings stains back. Full detail is in our carpet drying guide.
Walk in clean socks only
Keep to socks until the pile is dry, usually 2 to 6 hours. Shoes bring back the soil you just paid to remove.
Keep furniture off for 6 to 12 hours
Put foil or plastic tabs under wooden and metal legs for the first day. Wood stain and rust transfer into damp carpet permanently.
Watch for a spot reappearing
Give it two or three days. That is wicking, it is normal, and it gets fixed. The mechanism is in our guide to stains that come back.
Say something if anything is not right
Every clean carries a guarantee, and problems are easier to solve in the first week than a month later.
What Slows a Visit Down?
Nowhere to park. Every extra length of hose through a building adds setup time before any cleaning starts.
A room that was not cleared. Twenty minutes spent moving your belongings is twenty minutes not spent on the carpet.
Pets loose in the house. Three things combine badly with an anxious animal: equipment, open doors and cleaning solution. One closed room or a walk during the visit solves it.
Undisclosed spot treatments. Finding out mid-clean that one spot was bleached changes the plan, and sometimes the outcome.
A deadline nobody mentioned. A tight window is workable when we know about it, because we carry air movers and dry to the clock. Finding out on arrival that guests come in two hours is what causes problems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to move furniture before carpet cleaning?
Move small and light items: lamps, toys, cords, magazine racks, floor plants. Heavy furniture is not moved, and anything that needs shifting is agreed when you book.
Should I vacuum before the carpet cleaner comes?
If you have time, yes. We pre-vacuum anyway, so your pass simply means ours removes deeper soil rather than surface debris.
Do I need to be home during the cleaning?
Someone should be there at the start for the walkthrough and at the end to check the result. The middle of the visit does not need supervision.
How long before I can put the furniture back?
Six to twelve hours, with foil or plastic tabs under wooden and metal legs for the first 24 hours. Wood stain and rust mark damp carpet permanently.
What if a stain comes back a few days later?
Tell us. It is usually wicking from soil deeper in the carpet, it is a normal callback, and it is covered by the guarantee.
