All six figures assume an average home at normal indoor humidity with some airflow. A 9 AM appointment in a well-ventilated house is usually dry by mid-afternoon.
Wet carpet feels colder than dry carpet before it feels damp. One folded paper towel pressed into the pile for five seconds is the reliable test, and no transfer means dry.

Humidity is the Niagara-specific one. A July afternoon at 75% outdoor humidity gives evaporation nowhere to go, which is why the same carpet dries faster in October than in August.
Overwetting is the one item in that table caused by the cleaner rather than the house. A machine that applies more water than it recovers leaves the pad wet. A wet pad then dries upward through the carpet over a day or more.
How Do You Speed Up Drying?
- Put a fan on the room. A box fan aimed across the floor, not down at it, is the single biggest improvement available. Expect roughly half the drying time.
- Switch the furnace or HVAC fan to ON, not AUTO. Continuous circulation moves damp air out of the room even without heating or cooling.
- Run the air conditioning in summer. Air conditioning dehumidifies. Opening windows on a humid Niagara afternoon does the opposite.
- Open interior doors. A closed bedroom becomes its own humid microclimate within an hour.
- Run a dehumidifier in a basement. Below grade, airflow alone rarely finishes the job.
- Leave the furniture off until the pile is dry. Blocking airflow under a sofa creates the one damp patch that lasts overnight.
Two things not to do
Do not turn the heat up high. Warm air holds more moisture, but with no ventilation that moisture moves to the coolest surface in the house and condenses there.
Do not open windows in humid weather. One rule covers it: if outdoor air feels heavy, keep it outside and move indoor air instead.
When Can You Walk on It and Put Furniture Back?
Clean socks: immediately. Bare feet leave skin oils in the pile, and shoes bring the soil you just paid to remove straight back in.
Shoes: once dry, after 4 to 8 hours. Damp carpet grabs and holds new soil far more readily than dry carpet does.
Furniture: 6 to 12 hours, and protect the legs when it goes back.
Why the furniture legs matter

Foil squares or plastic tabs under each leg for 24 hours prevent both. Ask when booking if you want them supplied, and keep them in place for the first day.
What Happens If Carpet Stays Wet Too Long?
Past roughly 24 to 48 hours, three separate problems start.

Health effects. Damp materials affect more than the carpet. Health Canada notes that people in damp homes more often report eye and throat irritation, coughing and worsened asthma.
A carpet still visibly wet 24 hours later is not normal. Call the company that cleaned it rather than waiting another day to see.
