What Do the W, S, WS and X Codes Mean?

The letters are a manufacturer's instruction, not a suggestion. The Association for Contract Textiles uses the same four-code system that furniture makers print on the tag.
X is rarer than people fear. In a typical Niagara living room, W and WS cover most sofas bought in the last fifteen years. S shows up on decorative and older pieces, and X on a handful of specialty items.
Where Do You Find the Code on Your Sofa?
Four places, in the order worth checking:
- Under a seat cushion, on the deck the cushion sits on.
- On the cushion cover itself, sewn into the zip seam.
- Underneath the frame, on the dust cover. Tip the sofa forward rather than lifting it.
- Under the skirt at the back corner.
Photograph the tag once you find it. One photo answers the method question in seconds, and it is the single most useful thing to attach to a quote request.
Sectionals sometimes carry different codes on different sections, especially where someone added a chaise later. Check at least two pieces rather than assuming.
Can Your Couch Be Steam Cleaned?

"Steam cleaning" on upholstery means hot water extraction with a hand tool. Even on W-code fabric, we keep moisture at a fraction of what a carpet wand puts down. A sofa is not carpet. Cushions hold water, frames dry slowly, and a soaked seat deck wicks stains from the frame up into the fabric.
A good result on a W-code sofa still takes fabric testing first. We check colourfastness in a hidden area, behind a skirt or under the back, before anything touches a visible panel.
What Happens If the Wrong Method Is Used?
Water rings on S-code fabric
Rayon and viscose mark permanently where water dries. You end up with a hard-edged ring worse than the original spot.
Shrunken cushion covers
A cotton or linen cover that gets washed or over-wetted comes back a few percent smaller and no longer fits over the insert.
Dye bleeding
Loose dye migrates when wet, so dark piping runs into a light panel. Once it moves, it does not move back.
Browning on natural fibres
Slow drying wicks lignin and tannin to the surface from the frame or the fibre itself. The result is a yellow-brown cast across the whole panel.
Pile crushing on velvet
Pressure plus moisture flattens the nap, and the flattened area reads as a stain in daylight.
Each of these five costs more than the cleaning did. A ruined cushion cover means reupholstery, which runs into four figures against $130 to $200 for cleaning the whole sofa.
What If There Is No Tag at All?
Three kinds of sofa usually have no tag: older furniture, secondhand pieces, and anything reupholstered. Inspection then replaces reading.
Three checks settle it. We identify the fibre, test colourfastness in a hidden spot, and run a small moisture test to watch how the fabric responds.
Anything we cannot identify with confidence gets treated as S. Solvent on a fabric that would have tolerated water costs a little cleaning performance. Water on a fabric that needed solvent costs a sofa.
Which Fabrics Need the Most Care?
Viscose and rayon are the two most water-sensitive materials in common use, and shops often sell them as "faux silk". Both are classic S-code fabrics.
Linen shrinks, creases and shows water marks readily, which puts it near the top of the risk list.
Velvet needs low moisture throughout, plus the nap groomed in one direction while it dries.
Silk is professional-only work: tested first, then cleaned dry.

What does S mean on a furniture tag?

Can an X-code sofa be cleaned at all?
Only by vacuuming and light brushing. No liquid at all, including water and solvent. Spot work on X-code fabric risks permanent marking, so a badly stained X sofa often needs reupholstery instead.
Is microfibre a W or S fabric?
Both exist. Most microfibre is W or WS, but some is coded S, and water rings on the wrong one are very visible. Check the tag rather than assuming, because microfibre looks identical either way.
